I appreciate the insight and hope you're on target for Summer -any insight on a Beta/CTP for a VS2010? What we really need from the SL krew is the the end-user SL3B plug-in ASAP (also Go-Live). Right now, when you hit a page with SL3B content, the SL install icon attempts to re-install the SL2 plug-in -Oops! I hope this clunky experience doesn't turn off some potential SL3 consumers. I guess they want to be relatively sure SL3 doesn't break SL2. The RTW is not nearly as critical, right now, as cleaning up the current plug-in confusion. After all, the Olympics (SL2B2) went pretty well without the RTW.

There is a slide at the end, where Mark says that VS 2010 Beta 1 is "several months" away. My guess would be taht will release a public beta of VS2010 when Silverlight 3 goes RTW in the summer.

Based on the public information it looks like we won't get the "full" Silverlight 3 dev experience until VS 2010 comes out. I think Silverlight 3 RTW will be in the summer, but all of the tools (Blend 3 with Sketchflow, VS 2010 designer, .NET RIA Services) not until the fall of 2009.

Bart, this all depends on what the goal of SL3 Beta 1, really is. Is is out here, feature complete(for the most part), and only looking to flesh out the bugs?

If so, then I believe your analysis. If there are features that need to be added, then all bets are off because delivery will depend on how major the features are.

I truly believe the former, MS is simply testing stability, which they already know is pretty good, and fleshing out the inevitable bugs which we know are there.

That being the case, you could very well be correct, and a Summer release looks like a good guess. BTW, you haven't been too far off yet, so I feel comfortable rolling with your prediction.

SL3 Beta is FANTASTIC for me, the computer hobbist, to be playing . All those new toys like perspective, SaveFileDialog, pixel shaders [and Playboy Deep Zoom]. But as a development professional, there is NO WAY that I would ever deliver a product 'to the web' unless it was on a platform that was 'Released To Web'. Would you purchase a car with BETA EDITION AIR BAGS? I think not.

As for dropping mobile support? Yet another reason for developers to DESERT Silverlight for the i-Phone! & As if the Apple Developer community is going to be that interested in Eclipse?

Hurry up Microsoft.

Hi Bart, I think you are right they might wanna release SL3 independent off the other products. As it stands, a lot of the related products in the .NET world are in a somewhat curious state. For example, we know Win 7 is supposed to feature .NET 4 but we still haven't had a single proper beta for v4 till now! And if I can recall correctly in the Vista time frame, the .NET framework was way ahead in maturity than Windows by many-many months. In fact, it even launched a month or so before Vista's RTM. However, this time around, both VS 2010 and .NET 4 are way behind schedule in relation to Win 7 - considering we are expecting Win 7's only RC by next month or May! So, maybe we will have Win 7 launching with SL3 and .NET 3.5?? VS 2010 will lazily tag along .NET 4.0 and Blend 3 way post Win 7.. !?
