You are 100% dead on here. I have an iPhone and almost made the jump to iPhone development myself not too long ago...simply because monetizing your work is SO easy using their framework.
I will write about this in my next article, but essentially Silverlight has the MS environment as an ace up their sleave. Imagine writing a single Silverlight application and being able to sell it via a "Ms App Store".
With Silverlight 3 you should be able to auto-target: the web, desktop (OOTB), mobile, XBOX 360 (XBOBX Arcade) and the cloud (Azure) all in one shot.
That is what I am waiting for. Probably not going to happen til 2010.

[ App Store revenues vary, but it is way more than 10% ] Joining the i-Phone developer network, which includes the IDE (mac OSX 10 needed) and i-phone emulator, is around $99. Compare this to the expense of Expression Blend which costs more than a Mac Book! I-Phone apps are also sexy: as seen on TV. <br /><br />Silverlight I fear has lost the plot. Suffering a degree of 'mission creep' over these last three years. Sure, SL is a one stop in-cloud development tool and 'Flash Killer', but it is also WPF's poor cousin: Thus, alienating it from 'classic windows' coders. And with a steep learning curve, poor documentation and this 'geek programmer not web designer' vibe, I feel SL alienates the web guy who wants more from life than javascript. <br /><br />Maybe Silverlight per se, is still in Beta?<br /><br />AJ London

That is true that with a single framework you do have the advantage of knowing exactly the hardware it will be running on. You are also right the cost of getting Blend impedes you mainly from writing quality apps. MS does offer a lot of FREE/academic tools like Visual Studio 2008 Express, SQL Server Express etc. Not everything can be FREE.
This is why I am starting to preach its not Flash vs iPhone vs Silverlight. It is Adobe vs Apple vs Microsoft. Microsoft has the cloud, huge data centers, enterprise services, search, map SDKs, .NET, SQL Server, mobile platform etc all in one shot. Apple/Adobe have very few of each of these features.
Look at what Apple is trying to do now. The next-generation iPhone is going to support multiple cores and will have GPU acceleration. They are going after the DS/PSP and gamers as well as improving performance. Microsoft already has DirecX, XNA, XBOX 360...and Silvelight is already multi-threaded and you could write a host that can handle background apps. In some ways Apple is still going to catch up. Adobe has to hope to be bought out by Apple or by some miracle they allow Flash on the iPhone...which I doubt.
If Microsoft screws up the integration of Silverlight, then I am going over to the iPhone.

See you there!<br /><br />Agreed, Apple has some catching up to do, especially 'server-side'. And Adobe still haven't left the 1990's. However, when considering *technology uptake*, Silverlight is where? The .fli format is everywhere: from banners to UTube. Meanwhile, mention Silverlight to web developers who are not from Planet Mix, and they *might* have heard of it. In the analogy, Betamax was light years ahead of VHS in technology, but VHS was light years ahead of Betamax in terms of consumer popularity. So which one survived?<br /><br />In relation to your article, the market for what I call, consuming social web services, is going hand-held; in a big way. Even President 'BlackBerry' Obama has embraced the 24-7 mobile society. Google figured this too and released the Android operating system. So why did Microsoft turn it's corporate ass on the market sector that defies downturn gravity? I remember the Nokia N96 was billed as supporting Silverlight; but no-one told Nokia about that! Waiting around for the next PDC, is not good enough.<br /><br />Silverlight is great for the corporate data-presentation developer; Microsoft's prime customer base. But for those innovators wanting to exploit the full potential of Silverlight on the new Mobile Horizon, forget it. Mix 09 was a sad day for innovation.

Yup you hit several things right on:
- Silverlight is a great business RIA framework. Still waiting for the social aspect to be announced let alone used
- SL Mobile is a pipe dream and how I eluded to in the article MS has essentially strung us along for 2 years in this department
- MIX 2009 was impressive from the tooling perspective, but you are right not so much from the Silverlight perspective. As mentioned in the article, a lot of the features like: 3D, GPU, multi-touch, Out of Browser are all to get Silverlight ready for Mobile.
While I agree with you; hence I am disappointed...I am still holding out hope that MS can turn this around and give us a more focused Mobile strategy.
In the meantime I will read articles how someone comes up with a new Farting app on FaceBook or the iPhone and is making 20k/week. Or the guy who made Mob Wars 1 mil/month. A lot of these social/mini apps have the monitizing appeal of spending time writing an enterprise app. Furthermore, with these times its harder to make that one 150k deal than making a lot of $0.99 deals <img src="/editors/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" class="flag" alt="Smile" />

Nice idea. This is what is so cool about Software Development. We are in essentially the "mom and pop" phase. Its like New York, NY in the early 1900s anyone with an idea can set up shop relatively easily and profit it the idea is well run and implemented.

Microsoft is working out their "app store" and trying to change the way it works with the handset folks. Have you ever noticed that many WindowsMobile devices can't really be upgraded between versions? Or that some phone companies control what applications you can put on your phone and put locks on that capability?<br /><br />That's probably why SL Mobile hasn't made it out and around yet. They have to get adoption from those people who buy a "version" of the OS for their device and then they customize it from there.. Microsoft seems to have little control over their OS after they have provided it to the phone vendor. This might be the reason Silverlight adoption hasn't been an "option" yet.. <br /><br />It's quite interesting but Apple tells the phone/network vendor how their phone should be sold and how they should work. A lot of WindowsMobile's problems is with the handset makers and the phone network providers.. I don't expect Silverlight Mobile to make much traction or see more adoption until those issues are taken care of. I expect Microsoft to do that by the time Windows Mobile 7 hits next year....

That's the best part it can be a "cloud based" store that targets: Windows Mobile 7, Zune, Desktop and XBOX (what other company can match that)<br />- Blackberry released an add-in to develop .NET apps on the Blackberry yesterday. The new Palm OS embraces open Flash development. I think carriers that are getting creamed by the iPhone now like Sprint would love to get a competing platform they can work with. Phone carriers, manufacturers are not in the app dev business<br /><br />U are right there are huge gaps they have to fill. However, Microsoft does have the Azure Cloud OS and that is their ace in the sleeve. They can target 4-5 devices at once and Apple is right now one. The best part is they don't have to start with Mobile...Silverlight App Store on the XBOX, Zune, dekstop, Web would be a HUGE start and a leap where no one else is right now (even if we just get that next year).
